Personal Power and Boundaries

First of all, let's look at the simple definition of the word “Power”, power is merely the capacity to do work. When people hear the word power, they usually think of it in contexts such as a power-tripper in the workplace, or powering up their phone because it's always low. In magick, power is something you are born with, but something that grows in time too with real practice.
We can compare our magickal power to the use of our muscles, and as a Martial Artist I see power in magick the same way I see it in the dojo. To have true power you need to know the technique (Air), have the correct form/act (Earth), the repetition to become proficient (Water), the belief in yourself (Spirit) and the determination to achieve your final aim (Fire) – whatever aim that is.
Can power be given, stolen or borrowed? I would say, in truth, no. Because power is the consequence of our efforts, our working across a time period, it is purely ours, however, if you ask the question can power be amplified with the help of allies or a coven, then certainly! Energy can be borrowed or grouped and channelled to give yourself or others the oomph to add to the magick at hand, if you handle it correctly.
Now let's take a look at the term power in a non-magickal context as it relates to people and their mental state. One thing that is very, very hard to do is take our non-magickal power away from others, so for instance each time someone pisses you off and you react, they have stolen your power, they have stolen your energy and control of yourself for a short time. Another example, is essentially domination and submission, when you have an exploitative figure in your life – a relative, partner or boss, each time they lower your self-esteem or attempt to throw you under their control, when you comply, you give away your power to them and have had your will crushed. And this becomes a recurring theme as you are seen as weak, or a target.
But when you embody the thought and belief of “I'm not reacting to that, I own my power and know my self-worth”, life gets so much better! You do not lose your energy, you do not become unsettled, and you begin to find peace knowing your true worth. So why is this especially important for Witches, or Witches new to the path? It is because to be a very effective Witch, for yourself, or the community, you must have faith in yourself, in your worth, and in your abilities.
Almost all people on this planet will at one time or another begin to self-doubt, which is not necessarily a bad thing if it creates a self-reflection and results in improvement and growth, but it cannot be a long-standing experience if it is not conducive to growth. One of the most powerful things you can do is say: “No”, to anything in life that you do not want to do. Many of us have been soft in the past, or are now, we will say “Yes” just to make others happy at our expense, well for you that ends today.
If you want to see another happy, then help. If you do not want to do something, simply say no in a polite manner, or perhaps a rain check until you feel well again. This is your non-magickal power, your boundary, which emboldens your magickal power because you are focusing your energies in the best way you possibly can – by living a magickal life, full of power, confidence and purpose.
Only give your time, energy and “power” to that which is healthy for yourself and others.
Blessed Be! XxX
